"Do not be afraid when one
becomes rich,
when the glory of his
house is increased;
for when he dies
he shall carry nothing away;
his
glory shall not descend after him."
Psalm
49:16-17
It is tempting to envy the rich, those who have
wealth and enjoyment. But he'll come to his end like all men, and
when he comes to his end he will not be able to take his riches with
him.
vs 11-12
"Their
inner thought is that
their houses will last forever,
their
dwelling places to all generations;
they
call their lands after their own names.
Nevertheless
man, though in honor,
does not remain,
he
is like the beasts that perish."
Men strive to make their
name great; they name cities after themselves. They heap up to
themselves great honor. But that honor will be short lived, because
this is the way of fools and of those who approve their imagined
greatness.
vs 13:
"This
is the way of those who are foolish,
and
of their posterity who approve their sayings..."
And so,
what has he gained? He had his short life of wealth and honor and
prosperity, but it has come to an end and where will he be?
That
depends on who his God was while he was on earth. Satan is "the
god of this world" (2 Corinthians 4:4) and if the world is where
the man's allegiance was, he'll go with him at the end. For the
believer, however, the end is only the beginning of eternal joy.
vs
15:
"But God will redeem my soul
from the power of the grave,
for
he shall receive me."
Do not focus on laying up treasure
on earth, it's temporary at best. Focus on laying up treasure in
heaven, for that is forever.
Matthew 6:19-21
