"Be merciful to
me, O God, be merciful to me,
for my
soul trusts in you,
and in the shadow
of your wings
I will make my
refuge,
until these calamities have
passed by."
Psalm 57:1
Scorners
quote this verse to prove the Word of God untrue. "Does God have
wings," they ask?
Then they quote Psalm 91:4, “does God
have feathers?”
“He shall cover you with his feathers,
and
under his wings you shall take refuge;”
Psalm
91:4
In the Holy of Holies, the innermost chamber of the
Temple, lay the Ark of the Covenant covered by the mercy seat. There
are two golden angels aside of it whose wings extend over the mercy
seat, touching each other. If a person trusts God at the place of the
mercy seat, that person is then overshadowed by the wings extending
over it.
There was a huge curtain separating the Holy of
Holies from the outer court so that no one except the High Priest
could enter. But when Jesus Christ was crucified, that curtain split
in two from top to bottom:
“Then, behold, the veil of the
Temple
was torn in two from top to
bottom;
and the earth quaked, and
the rocks were split...”
Matthew
27:51
When that curtain split in two, it signified that there
is no longer a veil before the Holy of Holies. Jesus Christ is our
High Priest, and through him we are bidden to come to the Mercy Seat
in heaven.
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of
grace,
that we may obtain mercy and
find grace to help
in time of
need.”
Hebrews 4:16
God's
Word is true regardless whether or not we understand it.
