“Is
this not the fast that I have chosen:
to
loose the bonds of wickedness,
to
undo the heavy burdens,
to let the
oppressed go free,
and that you break
every yoke?"
Isaiah
58:6
Fasting is a very powerful tool along with prayer - for
those choosing to fast HIS way. When a person truly humbles himself
before God in fasting, it can loose strongholds of wickedness both in
himself and anyone he or she is praying for. It lifts heavy burdens
and can set people free who are under a yoke of bondage.
But
it has to be done God's way. It has to be done in a non-ritual way.
It has to be a day or days of mercy toward the poor, and acts of
righteousness - while not boasting to others that one is fasting.
vs
7:
"Is it not to share your
bread with the hungry,
and that you
bring to your house
the poor who are
cast out;
when you see the naked,
that you cover him,
and not hide
yourself from your own flesh?"
Indeed, Jesus himself
addressed this subject:
"Moreover, WHEN (not if) you
fast,
do not be like the hypocrites,
with
a sad countenance. For they disfigure their faces
that
they may appear to men to be fasting.
Assuredly,
I say to you, they have their reward.
But
you, when you fast, anoint your head
and wash your face, so that
you do not appear
to men to be fasting, but to your Father
who
is in the secret place; and your
Father
who sees in secret will reward you openly."
Matthew
6:16-18
Fasting can be one of the most powerful tools given to
believers, if only the one fasting does it from a right heart before
God, examining himself first before he even begins.
