“Now Jesus sat opposite the treasury
and
saw how the people put money into the treasury,
and
many who were rich put in much.
Then
one poor widow came and threw in two mites,
which
make a farthing.
So he called his
disciples to himself and said to them,
‘Assuredly,
I say to you that this poor widow
has
put in more than all those
who have
given to the treasury;
for they all
put in out of their abundance,
but
she out of her poverty put in all that she had,
her
whole livelihood.’”
Mark
12:41
It is human nature to recoil at the thought of giving,
especially if we’re having difficulty making ends meet. But there
is a way out of difficulty:
“Bring all the tithes into the
storehouse,
that there may be food in
my house,
and try me now in
this,”
says the Lord of hosts,
‘If
I will not open for you the windows of heaven
and
pour out for you such blessing
that
there will not be room enough to receive it.’”
Malachi
3:10
This is the only place in the Bible where the Lord says
“try me.” Throughout the Bible we are told not to put the Lord
our God to the test. But in this one place, we are invited to. If
you’re struggling, try the Lord with tithing ...and watch what he
will do.
It’s not that we’re “trying” God as in "I’ll
do this so he’ll do that." It’s that we’re learning HIS
way to manage our income in such a way as to receive his blessing.
When we take on his way of handling our income, we’re declaring
that we’re shifting our TRUST onto him, instead of relying on
ourselves. And that's the whole point.
