"And
Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life.
he
who comes to me shall never hunger,
and
he who believes in me shall never thirst."
John
6:35
What does Jesus mean when he says those believing in him
will never hunger or thirst?
God has created us with a
God-shaped void in our hearts. We are so human, we try numerous ways
to fill the void within us. Many are taught from their youth that
the way to happiness is to get a good education so that they can find
a good job which will pay lots of money to enable them to do whatever
they want in life. So they get the education and find a job, but they
find that nothing has provided the satisfaction that they hoped
for.
Then they wonder what CAN fill that void? They buy
things - houses, cars, hobbies, "toys," in an effort to find
that which will give them the happiness they seek. At each
acquisition, they feel that joy and excitement well up at first - but
invariably it wears off and the emptiness is there once again. They
never achieve that for which their heart yearns.
When Jesus
said that one who comes to him will never hunger or thirst, he was
conveying that only HE could satisfy the yearning of the human heart,
because that's how he made us.
When a person is born-again,
his whole life changes. Not the circumstances, but the focus.
Suddenly, what formerly consumed him just doesn't have the same
appeal anymore. He has the same trials, he may have the same
afflictions, but his innermost being has been changed and he finds
that God himself personally walks with him in every area of his life.
And THEN - the hunger disappears because finally - he has found that
which only can satisfy.
