September 1
"...knowing this first: that scoffers will
come
in the last days,
walking according to their own
lusts,
and saying, 'Where is the promise of
his coming?
For since the fathers
fell asleep, all things
continue as from the beginning of
creation.'
...The Lord is not slack
concerning his promise,
as some count
slackness, but is longsuffering
toward us, not willing that any
should perish
but that all should
come to repentance."
2 Peter
3:3, 4 ,9
Surely this is the day of the scoffer. They
make us think of Noah as he was building the ark. Scripture tells us
that Noah didn't just build the ark, he was also preaching to the
people as he built it (2 Peter 2:5).
A picture of the
scoffer:
"What is that crazy guy doing over there,
building something huge?"
"He says he's building a
boat to save people from a flood."
"A flood???
Here??? It doesn't even rain here."
"Well he says
it's going to rain and everyone's going to die in the flood."
"He's
been saying that for years. How long is he going to keep this
up?"
"He just keeps building and warning people,
year after year after year."
"Has anyone reported
him to the mental-health authorities?"
"No, people
think he's harmless, just deluded."
Then ...they all
died.
Noah believed what God said even though what God said
didn't "make sense."
The Word of God is what will
judge people. Those who refuse it will be judged, those who receive
it, even when it seems not to make sense, will be saved. The test of
faith is almost always the challenge to believe what God says
ESPECIALLY when it seems to not make sense.
Choosing to
believe the Word of God is the demonstration of a person's belief in
the INTEGRITY of God. Only fools value their human understanding
above the wisdom of God.
